How To Lose Weight While You Sleep?

sleep and weight lossFor years now, I can recall seeing articles saying how important sleep is to your fitness progress. I ignored these articles and most of the time, I skipped them all together. Until recently that is. I now have a better understanding of the importance of sleep to athletic performance so you may want to listen up.

How did I come to this conclusion? I was reading one of my monthly magazines, Men’s Health, and came across an article by Adam Bible. The following information is a synopsis from that article named, Get Some Sleep.

Lack of Sleep Makes You Eat More

This was interesting to me because for years now, I’ve been sleeping 4-6 hours a night. According to the article, the School of UPenn Medicine conducted a study and determined the day after you get very little sleep, you’re more likely to eat too many calories from fat. They further stated, when you are kept from sleep, the part of your brain which regulates emotion and body sensations were activated causing your craving to increase. So if you must eat a few extra things, just makes sure it’s not a late night pig out session.

The Effectiveness of Naps

Lack of sleep causes an increase of your stress hormone causing at some level, some anxiety. The immune system was also taxed somewhat but the levels went back to normal after a few brief 30 minute naps, per day.

So how much sleep is enough sleep. If you’re between 26-64 years old, approximately 7 to 9 hours was determined to be optimal. As far as working out goes, you should workout when you are most alert. If you are not a morning person and your energy levels are low, it would not be the best time for you to get in your workout. There is a benefit if you are a morning person, your body will act like a furnace and continue to burn calories at a higher rate for up to 36 hours.
